Winter Chills

I think New Year's resolutions get a bit of a bad rep. I understand that most people are like I want to lose 50 lbs and have rock hard abs and then quit 5 days after eating healthier. I don't blame people for not wanting to set goals like this, its actually a bit counter-productive. However, it is really important to set clear and focused goals and to take the time out of our hectic schedules to reflect on what kind of person we have become and what kind of person we want to be. I think the New Year is a reminder to better ourselves, but it shouldn't be the only time in the year we set out to re-evaluate. Here are some tips I use to help set goals and stick to them, I hope they help change your mind about New Year's resolutions!

Set goals with measurable achievements
It's important to have measurable goals, otherwise you might not realize when you've succeeded. There is this technique for setting goals called SMART- Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-Based, I think they're good criteria for setting goals, but the most important to me is Measurable! For example instead of saying I want to do more charity work, say I want to do a fundraiser once every other month. Having measurable goals also helps us measure how far we are to completion.

Set realistic goals in small steps
A great example of this is the common fitness goal. Instead of saying I want to lose weight, try setting the goal as I want to go to the gym once a week and stop drinking carbonated drinks. If you set realistic goals you are more likely to boost your confidence when achieving them. Doing the opposite can be really detrimental to improving yourself, so its imperative to start slowly.

Write lists
I love love love writing lists. I keep a notebook with me for lists about everything. I do it for several reasons, mostly just because my memory is NOT what it used to be and its useful to look back on what you thought. Second it helps me to organize my thoughts, there are usually a million things kicking about in my head, my brain probably looks like the inside of your leftover chow mien take away, so its good to organize your thoughts.

Along with my list book, I keep printed out calendars to write out actions to complete on certain dates and keep track of events. My calendars really help with planning ahead and being able to set aside time to clean, relax, and even plan more! They also help me remember when I last did something, like changed the water filter etc.
